EAP Materials: Design, Research, Pedagogical Principles.

Prof Nigel Harwood

While my previous work (Walkova 2024a,b) focused on using theory and research to draw pedagogical implications, this projects takes pedagogy as a starting point and aims to uncover EAP practitioners’ pedagogical reasoning, or “the thinking that underpins informed professional practice” (Loughran 2019:526). The emphasis is on the rationale for choices made in the materials design as based on research, theoretical frameworks and pedagogical principles. Co-edited with Nigel Harwood, a leading researcher in English language teaching materials, the chapters in this volume will have an innovative format: rather than presenting empirical research, they will showcase materials developed by EAP practitioners in a variety of geographical, institutional, educational and disciplinary contexts, achieving a variety of learning outcomes and applying a variety of teaching approaches. The volume will be of use to EAP practitioners for inspiring or challenging their own pedagogical approaches, to teacher educators for identifying areas for teacher development, and to researchers for gaining insights into the realities of EAP pedagogy in the classroom. The volume is currently in preparation and is expected to be published in 2028.
