The implementation of flipped teaching in Korean Language - Cuie Xu
Dr Cuie Xu
Lecturer in Korean
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different teaching methods. I conducted this study on my one-year-long beginner Korean module in 2023-2024 with three parallel groups and 43 participants. I implemented flipped teaching, which shifted knowledge transmission — vocabulary and grammar learning — to online pre-work for one parallel group, and for the other two parallel groups, I continued to use the lecturing method. I completed data collection by June 2024. Data showed that the flipped teaching enhanced students' academic performance and attendance rates, reduced in-class anxiety, and enhanced teaching inclusivity, as students with varied learning abilities can learn at their own pace. This study received £1,891 awards, demonstrating its strategic value to our school and the university:
- LCS Rapid Response Fund (£497.06, Feb 2024) and PRiA Seedcorn Fund (£493.8, March 2024) to hire a research assistant for data analysis.
- AHC International Conference Fund (£400.10, March 2024) and PRiA Seedcorn Fund (£500, Feb 2025) for disseminating findings at the EAKLE August 2024 conference in Italy and at the 32nd AKSE Conference at the University of Edinburgh in June 2025, respectively.
