This pioneering resource fills a critical gap in materials suitable for university-level learners, integrating critical thinking, inclusivity, and a decolonising approach to language learning. A completed textbook with 10 units that will be used as the source material for the module SPPO3010.  The book will also be published Open source, which means other universities will have access to the materials and can be used by other universities worldwide. I will be creating audio and video material to accompany and include in the textbook.

The open textbook will challenge students to engage with complex language and cultural content, addressing the lack of representation of diverse Latin American communities and their linguistic variations. It will include authentic audio-visual materials, co-created with contributors from Spain and Latin America, to reflect the richness and diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. The book also critically examines colonial legacies and concepts of linguistic prestige to foster deeper understanding and equitable learning.

Aimed primarily at SPPO3010 Spanish Practical Language III, a core module for Spanish degree students at Leeds, the textbook will also benefit other advanced-level Spanish learners globally. Unlike existing resources that lack university-level critical engagement, this open textbook will adaptable, allowing educators to customise content for specific linguistic varieties or cultural contexts.

Key features include Creative Commons licensing for free and collaborative use, compliance with WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards, and multimedia integration to enhance learner engagement. By focusing on inclusivity and equity, the textbook aligns with the University of Leeds’ commitment to diversifying the curriculum and creating sustainable learning environments.
