WORKSHOP: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion scenarios for the language teacher in Higher Education

Date
Date
Thursday 9 June 2022, 10:00 - 11:30
Location
Parkinson Building Room (B.08)

The University of Leeds 10-year strategy is committed to the principles of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), stating that

"we should all be part of a learning and working environment that is free from barriers, regardless of age, caring responsibilities, disabilities, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity status, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation".

Such principles are at the heart of the language teaching profession, particularly in a HE context where students are supported and encouraged to critically appreciate diversity and deeply understand their own linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

This workshop aims to provide an opportunity for a wide discussion on how we implement EDI policies and principles. The workshop will include scenarios from the day-to-day work of language teachers and academics when occasionally, and despite efforts to follow policies, one can miss an EDI issue. This is an interactive workshop in which all attendees are encouraged to share their own examples. We will discuss how, as a language teaching community, we can openly yet sensitively deal with EDI issues in order to make a positive impact on students' education regardless of their backgrounds and abilities. The discussion in the workshop will be led by Dr Rasha Soliman (EDI Lead for the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies), and will include both staff and student-facing scenarios.

Tea, coffee and refreshments will be served. It would be appreciated if you could RSVP by the 6th of June, 2022. If you are based at the University of Leeds, please respond to the calendar invitation email sent recently. If you are external to the University of Leeds, and you would like to attend this in-person workshop, please email: celt@leeds.ac.uk
