Join Professor Antonio Martínez-Arboleda (University of Leeds – UK) for an interactive event designed specifically for language educators.
We will discover together the potential of Generative AI (Gen AI) in language teaching and learning with Critical Pedagogy and Open Education Perspectives.
This session will begin with an introduction to Gen AI, focusing on the ethical and educational questions that arise with its use by both educators and students, including access, design potential, and long-term cost.
The event will incorporate an active learning experience where participants will
a) learn about current practice in AI chatbots for Language Learning and Teaching
b) engage hands-on in an envisioning collaborative exercise on AI for Language Learning and Teaching, both for Arabic and for any other languages.
The event will be video recorded, but only those attending the event live will be able to participate in the collaborative exercise.
The speaker
Antonio Martínez-Arboleda, Professor of Open and Digital Education at the University of Leeds, has been actively involved in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into his teaching and scholarly production since 2022. He has delivered numerous guest lectures, workshops, and has published on this topic, including two co-edited books by #creativeHE. His work in AI aims to explore and address the educational and strategic implications of AI technologies. He leads the project Lingua Connect, with the Universities of Leeds, Federal Minas Gerais, and Tec de Monterrey, on Critical Pedagogy for Language Learning and AI. Transitioning from a legal and business background to academia, Antonio embarked on his career at the University of Leeds in 1998 as a Spanish Language Tutor. Antonio became a Teaching Fellow in Spanish in 2001, Senior Teaching Fellow in 2006, and Principal Teaching Fellow in 2011. This period was crucial for developing his expertise in Spanish Language Education and Area Studies (Spanish Politics and Business), in particular as he introduced educational innovations in the area of authentic learning, digital learning, and learner autonomy. Antonio's career took a pivotal turn in 2009 when he was invited to the UK Open Educational Resources repository project The Humbox, for Arts, Humanities and Languages. His subsequent participation in numerous national open education initiatives, combined with his dedication to teaching, helped him to developed his scholarship and research in the field of Critical Digital and Open Pedagogies with tangible contributions in the areas of Student Collaborative Knowledge Production through Podcasting, Poetry Translation and Audio-visual Feedback. In recognition to his academic leadership, he became Professor of Open and Digital Education in 2023. He is also the Academic Lead for Open Educational Practice of his University and Senior Lead for the Knowledge Equity Network, a cross-institutional global initiative that he has contributed to shape since its inception in 2022.
