Speaker: Dr Charles Lam

This hands-on workshop showcases the versatile use of the cloud-based "ipython notebook" interface for conducting corpus analysis. Specifically, the workshop introduces some use cases of corpus linguistics in EAP contexts and their implementation with Python, a popular programming language for natural language processing (NLP). Common tasks in NLP, such as text classification and sentiment analysis, and how they might be adopted to explore academic texts will also be demonstrated. Please note that no prior knowledge in programming is required for this workshop.  Please bring your laptop.

Charles Lam is a Lecturer in English for Academic Purposes in the Language Centre, School of Languages, Cultures and Societies. His teaching interests lie in academic communications in STEM at all levels. His research includes corpus linguistics and digital humanities.
