AI in the Classroom: Practical Insights for Teaching Foreign or Second Language with Generative AI Tools

The Department of Arabic, Islamic, Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Leeds in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo and the Department of Cross-cultural and Regional Studies, University of Copenhagen cordially invite you to their jointly organised event on "AI in the Classroom: Practical Insights for Teaching Foreign or Second Language with Generative AI Tools" delivered by Dr Attia Youseif (Indiana University) and Dr Badri Adhikari (the university of Missouri's. Louis). This event will be the first one in the series of events on "Digital Technologies for Language Teaching Forum". Please see attached event poster for an overview of the event.

Date: Wednesday 2nd October, 16:00-18:00 (UK Time).

The event will include two workshops each is 40 minutes long followed by 10 minutes Q&A session to give the audience chance to ask questions and discuss issues with workshop leaders.

"Generative AI Tools in the World Language Instruction: Practical Approaches for Enhancing Language Skills and Cultural Understanding."

Abstract: This presentation will explore the transformative potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) in revolutionizing the teaching and learning of Arabic. By harnessing the capabilities of these advanced AI tools, educators can create dynamic and immersive language environments that foster authentic language acquisition and cultural understanding.

The presentation will delve into practical strategies for integrating LLMs into classroom settings. We will discuss how these tools can be used to enhance core language skills; listening, reading, speaking, and writing. By generating realistic language scenarios and providing personalized feedback, LLMs can create engaging and effective learning experiences.

Furthermore, the presentation will explore how LLMs can be used to deepen students' cultural understanding of Arabic. By simulating real-world interactions and providing exposure to authentic cultural contexts, these tools can help learners develop a nuanced appreciation of the Arabic language and culture.

We will examine the most promising LLM tools available for Arabic language instruction and discuss their specific applications in the classroom. By leveraging these technologies, educators can create innovative and engaging learning experiences that empower students to engage with both the language and the rich cultural context of Arabic.

Bio: Dr. Attia Youseif, a Senior Lecturer at Indiana University's Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures. He leads the Tutoring in Arabic Flagship Program and holds leadership roles in the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Dr. Youseif is dedicated to exploring the intersection of AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) in world language instruction. His research focuses on innovative curriculum development and teacher training, exploring modern pedagogical methods, etc. Dr. Youseif has authored numerous publications and presented at conferences worldwide, significantly advancing the field of language teaching through his pioneering work in integrating cutting-edge technologies.

Can Reviewing the Writing Process Benefit Language Teachers and Students?

Abstract: Language students can improve their writing quality with effective time management, strategic planning, deliberate pausing, and reflection during the writing process. Similarly, by reviewing key elements of students' writing processes, language teachers can provide personalized and targeted feedback to help students develop critical thinking, metacognitive awareness, and language proficiency. In addition to these topics, this talk will discuss new tools like Process Feedback, which can provide both teachers and students with insightful data and measurements of the writing process. Participants will also have the opportunity to try out and learn how to use these new and safe-guarded AI-powered tools.

Bio: Dr. Adhikari is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL). He is an accomplished expert in AI and deep learning. His research is funded by NVIDIA, Google, and the U.S. National Science Foundation. He has published several papers on topics such as writing process visualizations, safeguarded integration of AI into educational tools, and understanding students' perception of AI, in prestigious journals such as Education Sciences and IEEE Frontiers in Education. At UMSL, he teaches Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, Interpretable Machine Learning, and Data Visualization.
